DBSA Colorado Springs Launches Free Dual Diagnosis Support Group
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) Colorado Springs, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support, education, and resources for individuals living with mood disorders, today announced the launch of the Dual Diagnosis Support Group for people living with mental health and addiction issues.
The Dual Diagnosis Support Group will be held every Monday from 6-7:30 p.m. at Sunrise Counseling and Wellness located at 421 S. Tejon St. Suite 200. Free parking is available in the adjacent lot after 5 p.m. DBSA-CS encourages anyone living with mental health and addiction issues to attend the support group. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with others who understand their journey, learn valuable insights, and find collective strength in a supportive community.
Remarking on the new support group, DBSA-CS Board President Marissa Valdez said, “I am very proud and excited for DBSA-CS to offer a Dual Diagnosis Support Group. People who live with co-occurring disorders, specifically mood disorders and addiction, constitute a unique and deserving community with distinct support needs. The overall goal of DBSA-CS is to provide support for individuals on their path to wellness, and I firmly believe that a dedicated group where peers can mutually support one another through the challenges of both mental illness and addiction is indispensable for their journey to well-being. Mood disorders and addiction frequently coexist, and obtaining effective help and support for only one, without addressing the other, is seldom successful. Our peers need to embrace comprehensive assistance for both mental health and addiction concurrently to truly progress towards wellness and hope.”
DBSA-CS support groups stand out for their unique peer facilitation, creating an environment for people to connect, share experiences, and provide emotional support. Guided by peers, these groups validate feelings, alleviate isolation, and empower participants with shared insights and coping strategies, ultimately fostering enhanced mental well-being. Importantly, these groups are not only free but also maintain confidentiality for all participants, ensuring a safe and secure environment for open discussions and support.
“Navigating life with both a mental health diagnosis and an addiction can pose challenges in finding a supportive recovery community. While I rely on DBSA groups for mental health support and addiction-focused groups for addressing addiction, the Dual Diagnosis Support Group serves as a unique space where I connect with individuals who share similar experiences. In this inclusive setting, I can openly share all aspects of my journey without the fear of judgment, gaining insights from others who have successfully navigated the same challenges I may be confronting on any given day,” said Brian Allen, Dual Diagnosis Support Group Peer Facilitator.
The Dual Diagnosis Support Group is among several DBSA-CS support groups specifically designed for people living with mood disorders. Notably, the organization has recently introduced a virtual LGBTQIA+ support group for participants aged 18 and older. Emphasizing a peer-facilitated approach, all DBSA-CS support groups are dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with mood disorders.
